Certification Offering
AAPQM Certification Defined
A QM (Quality Matters) course certification means an online or blended course has undergone an official review and has met the quality assurance standards of the QM Rubric at a level of 85% or greater. The certification process is managed by Quality Matters, a national and international organization that promotes quality assurance in online and blended learning.
The name "AAPQM" may be a slight variation of the more standard "APPQMR," which stands for "Applying the QM Rubric." This is Quality Matters' core workshop that teaches participants how to use the QM Rubric for course reviews. Completing this workshop is often a prerequisite for more advanced QM certifications.
1. We will provide the opportunity to certification in AAPQM by taking the free QM workshop provided by Dr. Joseph Runciman.
However, it is scheduled for the third week of October and the next offering will be on the following dates:
· Wed., Oct. 22nd - 1:00pm-4:30pm (ET)
· Thu., Oct. 23rd - 1:00pm-4:30pm (ET)
Registration link to the AAPQM opportunity: Register for the Zoom session
2. We suggest (not required) that the students take the free workshop because they will:
a. Learn how to apply the QM rubric.
b. Learn what high-quality instructional design looks like
c. They will receive a certificate of completion.
d. The students can support mentors in other instructional design areas if they complete the certification.
3. We offer a non-certification opportunity for a free workshop about our IRC Bluejay Checklist review.

Xiaohan Yang holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Florida Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Educational Studies (Urban Education) from Johns Hopkins University, Xiaohan brings an interdisciplinary background to her research at the intersection of education and technology. Xiaohan, originally from China, completed her initial teacher certification training in China, earning the Chinese National Teacher Certification, and has four years of practical teaching experience in both Chinese and American K-12 classrooms.
Since joining the University of Prince Edward Island in September 2024, I have actively engaged in a range of academic and professional roles that have strengthened my competencies as a Ph.D. student in Educational Studies. I began as a volunteer Teaching Assistant for the Principles and Practices of Teaching EAL course, where I provided feedback on student work and shared my own ESL teaching experience. I then worked as a Student Proctor/Scribe with Accessibility Services, developing attention to detail and a strong commitment to academic integrity. From January to April 2025, I served as a Graduate Research Assistant, supporting faculty on survey design, data analysis, and program evaluation. This fall, I will teach RS 2610: Chinese Religion and Philosophy as a sessional instructor and begin a new Graduate Research Assistant position analyzing large-scale K–12 assessment data.
My research focuses on two areas: the role of generative AI in providing emotional support for adolescents, and the use of generative AI to help ESL students overcome language barriers in mathematics learning.
The latter was presented in person at the 2025 CSSE Conference in Toronto, where I shared findings on technology integration and cognitive load reduction.
Thanks to Dr. Trexler’s invitation to serve as a mentor for one or two upcoming ITGL students, I hope to work with individuals whose research interests align with exploring generative AI in education, so that I can provide targeted feedback and meaningful guidance.
I look forward to supporting them in refining research questions, strengthening methodological approaches, and connecting their work to current scholarship in educational technology.
